Kohaku Fujino

In 1871 (Media 4), Kohaku Fujino was born in Kuma-cho, Ukena county. His real name was "Kiyomu" and his childhood name was "Kumao". He was a cousin of Shiki.
His mother "Toe" was the third daughter of Kanzan Ohara and Shiki's mother "Yae" was the first daughter of Kanzan.
Kohaku studied under Shoyo Tsubouchi and others at Tokyo special school (The present Waseda University).
He gave his own penname as "Kohaku" at the age of 19. He distinguished himself in the fresh style of Haiku that he studied under Shiki, but he had been metally unbalanced little by little, and committed suicide by pistol shooting at the age of 25, on 7th Apr. of 1895 (Meiji 28). At that time, Shiki was in Ujina, Hiroshima, on his way for China as a war correspondent.
In 1897 (Meiji 30), Shiki published "Kohaku's posthumous manuscripts" by himself.
His grave standed in Joshin-ji Temple of Iwaidani, the suburbs of Matsuyama City.
In 1895 (Meiji 28), Shiki visited Kohaku's grave and standed in a little while, and presented the following memorial Haiku of condolence.

" Though I don't pass away You can't live to a great age The autumn breeze is blowing"
