Bishamon Slope

Shiki's Haiku Monument

"A cow walks on Bishamon Slope
Late on an Autumn evening"

(Shiki)

This Haiku monument is located at a junction of three roads halfway up from the Ropeway in the direction of Ehime University. Unfortunately, the threat of rain caused Shiki and his friends to end their stroll early.
This haiku was the second one written (referred to in Haiku poetry as "Sansaku-shu").

This monument is located in an unfavorable position northwest of Matsuyama Castle; therefore, Bishamonten was dedicated to maintaining quiet for the Four Devas attending Taishakuten, and is well known as one of the Seven Deities.
Generally speaking, Bishamonten takes on the form of one carring a precious stick in the right hand and a little precious tower in the left hand.
It is a guardian deity for Buddhism and the believer in Buddhism.
