Shoujuji Temple

"It's in those days when
Awkward warbling of bush warblers change into
The first song in flight"
(Kyoshi)

In autumn of 1946 (Showa 21), the commemorative Haiku gathering of Number 600 of Haiku magazine, "Hototogisu" was held in Shoujuji Temple.
At that meeting, kyokudo proposed to built the memorial monument in the birthplace of "Hototogisu", Matsuyama, and to carve Kyoshi's Haiku on it. The members all gave their consent to this proposal.
"awkward" warbling" implies that a bush warbler in winter can't song so well as in spring.
The starting of "Hototogisu" was compared to awkward warbling of a bush warbler.
To hear the publishing of "Hototogisu", Meisetsu composed the following Haiku in the first issue of it.
"It's very delightful for me
To hear the first song of "Hototogisu"
            Just in my country home"
                                        (Meisetsu)
