"The remains of residence of Shiki's mother and sister
: The greenbelt of Nakano River (4 Minato-cho)



This house was built for Shiki's mother and sister by the Ohara family. That consisted of 4-mat and 6-mat room and had a narrow garden.
In May 14th of 1888 (Meiji 21), They moved to the house number 16( 10 in the residence of Ohara family) that was about a hundred meters away from the west of the house Shiki grew up.
In the summer of 1892 (Meiji 25), a university student, Soseki visited this house and tasted deliciously "Matsuyama Sushi" (vinegared rice steamed in stock with various vegetables) that Shiki's mother cooked.
Shiki's grown up house was sold out in 1889 (Meiji 22), and broken down in the winter of 1923 (Taisho 12). A few of the timbers were made use of the materials for Shiki-do Hall in the precinct of Shoujouji Temple. Shiki's mother and sister decided to move to the Shiki's residence in Tokyo on the recommendation of Shiki.
On Nov. 13th of 1892 (Meiji 25), they left Mitsuhama and Shiki went to Kobe to meet them. After that, they saw the sight of Kyoto and arrived at Shinbashi Station of Tokyo on November 17th. On this day, Shiki composed the following Haiku.
"The weather just clean up
      So as to let my mother view"
            Mt. Fuji covered with snow"
