Kyohei's kana poem monument (Kyohei Gagyudho)
Kyohei Gagyudho was the pupil of Shikho Kagami, the pupil of Basho Matsuo. This kana (the Japanese syllabary) poem monument was built by Kyohei on Feb. of 1755 (Hhoreki 5), the 25th anniversary of Shikho's death.
Kana poem is the former type of the new-type poem. This sort of kana poem monument are in existence of only £ôtwo; Basho monument built by Shikho in the Soringji Temple in Higashiyama, Kyoto, in 1710 (Houei 7) and Shikho monument built after Basho monument in 1790 (Kansei7),by Fugo in the domain of Kishu (present Wakayama Prefecture).
Kyohei held the memorial services of Shikho's 33rd anniversary of his death in 1763 (Houreki 3), when Chikua Nirokuan, Issa Kobayashi's teacher, came and composed the Haiku, "Kyohei has decided to be / in a straight line of this way/ weeping cherry is in bloom". This weeping cherry appeared in this Haiku was the cherry tree in front of the main building of Enpukuji Temple.
This cherry tree had withered and this monument had been half buried in the ground by the pond in the garden of this Temple.
We can have a idea of that Issa Kobayashi came to this place, because he followed his teacher, Chikua's footprints in 1795 (Kansei 7).
