Bunkyou Hall (Dogo)



"I feel a longing for time-honored things
A pine tree and a chrysanthemum
That are familiar to us"
(Shiki)

This monument was built on Feb. 7th of 1973 (Showa 48).
The unveiling ceremony was held on Oct. 11th.
The characters on this monument are the enlargement of Shiki's handwriting in the Haiku magazine, "Kanzan Rakuboku".
" The magazine of Ehime Education" was first published on June 12th of 1887 (Meiji 20), by The association of Ehime Education.
It's number 100th has been planed to published on the Emperor Meiji's Birthday, Nov. 3rd in the same year, and Ganshin Kondho visited Shiki in Gudabutsu-an Hermitage to ask to composed the celebratory Haiku.
He was born in the family of good at Chinese Poem and his pen name was "Konan" or "Gakan". And he was good at and loved Haiku, and he was the member of "Shofu-kai" and on good terms with Shiki.
He stood in the garden and told what he has come for and Shiki wrote this Haiku and handed him this Haiku with easy.

Shiki wrote another Haiku,

"It got to number 100
    When the chrysanthemum just come into bloom
            It's a matter for congratulations"
