Hogon Temple



"One way go through in a straight line brightly glittering in the setting sun it semms just like my life " (Mokichi Saitoh)

This monument was built at the side of the priests' living quater within the precinct of "Hogon-ji Temple".
This tanka(a 31 syllable Japanese poet) is one of the most well-known poem in the most important work of the poet "Mokichi Saitoh". This tanka in the first poem of the biginning 9 "Ippon Michi - One Way" in his second poetry "Aratama" (published in 1921).
The connection of Mokichi and Hogon-ji Temple was derived from that he had visited the Temple in 12th May of 1936(Showa 11).
One theory holds that this tanka implyed the image of the declining sun in autumn, in Yyogi-hara, Tokyo and a lonely man's straight path of life are reflected double earch other.
The poet "Jiro Yamagami" received Mokichi's hair and stored it this place.
The characters on this monument is Mokichi's own writing.
In 15th Mar. of 1991(Heisei 3), Jiro Yamagami's three daughter unveiled this monument at the unveiling ceremony that the person connected Ippen-kai and tanka had attended.
