"The grass of Juzu beads
Remind me of my uncle residence that
I used to go to"

This Haiku appeared in "Sansaku-shu" prefacing "looking the view from a rickshaw, on his way to Imade, on Oct. 7th of 1895 (Meiji 28). Shiki revised "Hatomugi" in "Sansaku-shu" into "the grass of beads" in "Kanzan Rakuboku".

¡ÉUncle¡É was the elder brother of his father, Masafusa Saeki. Shiki had used to go his uncle house in Yodo, to practice calligraphy from the age of six.

This monument was built in 1972 (Showa 47).

[Notes]

"Hatomugi" and "Juzu beads" : Scientific name is "coix lacryma-jobi". A perennial plant belonged to the family of rice plant of genus Juzu beads.
It grows to the height of 80 - 200 centimeters. The tropical region of Asia is the original home of it.
