Mishima Shrine

"In the departing autumn season
I feel as if the two pine trees
Lead each other by hand"

(Shiki)

This Haiku appeared in Shiki's posthumous, "Sansaku-shu".
It said that on Oct. 7th of 1895 (Meiji 28), on his way to visit Seigetsu Murakami, he said, "I remembered the play in my childhood. The "Tebiki pine tree" had survived up to now. It became more thick to hide myself than it was twenty years ago." He composed this Haiku longing for the "Tebiki pine tree" in the precincts of Mishima Shrine (in Takenomiya).
Two trunks of the tree stuck each other in the shape of H-character at the part of about six meters high.
This Haiku monument was the first monument of Shiki' Haiku inclusive of the monument of "young sweetfish" in Ehime Prefecture and built in 1933.
The characters on this monument was the enlargement of his own handwriting in "Kanzan Rakuboku".
