Joushuji Temple

"A ship is sailing on
Putting a just mark on Ichoji Temple
On the cool of day"
(Hekigotou)

Hekigotou made a journey throughout the country from 1906 (Meiji 39) till 1911 (Meiji 44), to promote the so-called, "New trend of Haiku".
He said in "Zoku-sanzenri - continued three thousand miles" that he attended the meeting of "MitsuMitodori-kai", the Haiku association of this district, held on Aug. 11th of 1910 (Meiji 43), in Joushinji Temple, on the way of this journey.
This Haiku was composed by him in this meeting when the five of Ishu, Raishikyu, Rensui, Rinbutsu and Hekigotou attended.
Rinbutsu was the chief priest of Joushinji Temple and his haiku was the following ;

"I lift up my eyes As the cool of night goes on A meteor is frequently shooting" (Rinbutsu)

The following Haiku is one of the most important work of Hekigotou.

"The red flower of camellia Have just dropped with the white one In the precincts of Temple"

(Composed in 1894 (Meiji 29) , by Hekigotou)
