(Built by the association of aged club of Horiekou-ku, on Oct.23, 1968 (Showa 43), to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Meiji)The characters on this monument were the enlargement of Shiki's own handwriting in the Haiku poetry, "Kanzan-Rakuboku" ; the part of the creature of the end of winter. "globefish" is the season word of winter.
"Chishima" was the torpedo boat of 75 tons that had been built in France.
On the way of taking the boat to Japan, she clashed with English merchant ship, "Ravenna" of 3,000 tons, beforedawn of Nov.30 of 1892 (Meiji 25) and sank offshore between Mutsuki Island and Gogo Island. The seventy-four crews of admiral Officer, Kijima and others on it died of their duties and the villagers devoted themselves to rescue them. The monument of shipwreck of "Chishima" written by the Fleet admiral of Japan Fleet, Togo, is on the left side of this monument.
In Dec.1, 1892 (Meiji 25), Shiki went to the Japan Newspaper Company at first. His salary was fifteen yen at that time. This Haiku was appeared in the column of comments on current topics by titled "a watery grave" of newspaper of "Nippon".
