Isamu Yoshii (1886 - 1960) stayed two months in this place, in 1934 (Showa 9) and he usually composed on Haiku of the self-willed youth and the life of pleasure with the emotion of luster and sadness in the simple style."I soak myself in the hotspring In Tomokuni of this country, the great Iyo, My heart is slightly warmed and many things come to my mind" (Isamu Yoshii)
But, between 1931 (Showa 6), when he set up the aim to live in retirement in Tosa (present Kouchi Prefecture), and 1933 (Showa 8), when he divorced his wife, he buried his past habits of wandering about and changed the style of tanka into the style faced the sadness of life. This tanka was composed at that time.
"Tomokuni" was the name of this district, and "Gongen-spa" was used to be called "the Hotspring of Tomokuni".
