"Laying out chaff to dry Chickens frolic here and there on The inside of the gate" (Shiki)
Engetsu Mori (his real name was "Tsugitaro") was born Yodo, Yodo village, Onsen county, Matsuyama, in 1870 (Meiji 3).
He who was three years younger than Shiki, went on Eale University in US after graduating from Doshisha University and Matsuyama Junior High School.
After that time, he had been a teacher in Matsuyama Junior High School and Kashiwabara Junior High School in Hyogo Prefecture.
The elder brother of Shiki's father, Masafumi Saeki lived in his wife's parents' home, Genzo Mori's residence where Shiki often went on an overnight visited with his sister, Ritsu after the abolish of feudal domain system.
My uncle's house appeared in the Haiku, "The adley remains me of / my uncle's house that I had been / used to visit one time" in "Sansaku-shu" means this residence. The house at the western side of this house was the house of Engetsu Mori who was three years younger than Shiki and a playmate of Shiki's childhood.
Referring to "Sansaku-shu", on Oct.7th, 1895 (Meiji 28), Shiki, who left Gudabutsu-an Hermitage by rickshaw, dropped in Engetsu's residence at dusk on his back after visiting Seigetsu's residence, At that time, Shiki requested Engetsu to composed Haiku and he originated this Haiku, "Laying out chaff to dry / Chickens frolic here and there on / The inside of the gate".
In 1900 (Meiji 43), when Soseki had got a serious ill in Shuzenji Temple, Engetsu presented "the bamboo of the old Kurasawa" and Soseki was very pleased with it and returned the letter of thanks and the strip of fancy paper to be written the following Haiku;"I have been staying here In this dewy hermitage since I got This fine bamboo of Kurasawa (Soseki)Engetsu established the Haiku gathering, "Ayu-kai" with Kahoku Mori, a brother-in -law, and others, and did his best in the development of Haiku in local.
He lost his friend, Shiki during the visiting America."Five or six children of The village are playing in the rainy night The anniversary of Shiki's death"His most important Haiku;"The sound of thunder went away And the summer afternoon shower have moved To the direction of Tosa"He died aged 85 in 1955 (Showa 30).
