Senshuji Temple



"The Japanese cedar trees growing In Senshuji Temple have made the way Just to lead the moonlight" (Ichijun Takahashi)

This Haiku was carved on the small natural stone in front of the grave of Takahashi's family that was located just at the left side of the main gate of Senshuji Temple.

Ichijun Takahashi (1899 - 1958) died aged 58.
His real name was "Hajime". He was born in Matsuyama and an educator and a Haiku originator , and graduated from the faculty of politics of Waseda University.
He took his post in Matsuyama Commercial High School and Matsuyama Commercial Collage (the present Matsuyama University).He taught French and the science of politics. Many young people were impressed by his speech on Buddhism.

He had "Ichijun" as a penname in Haiku. He was a free-style Haiku originator and a member of the Haiku magazine, "Soun".
On Nov.1st, 1939 (Showa 14), Santoka visited Ichijun with the letter of introduction of Sumita Ohyama, from Yamaguchi Prefecture. Since that time, Ichijun took good care of Santoka until he died on Oct.10th, 1940 (Showa 15).

This Haiku monument was located in the precincts of Chokenji Temple.
