"Pick up a piece of branch From a flower wastebasket Arranged cherry blossoms in" (Hekigoto Kawahigashi)

This Haiku monument was built in Matsuyama prison to educate prisoners in good taste, in 1932(Showa 7). Eight years had passed since Hekigoto originated this Haiku at the age of 52, in 1924(Taisho 13).
In 1st Aug. 1953(Showa 28), it was moved to the place by the moat(4-chome, 2-bancho) in front of City Hall, to celebrate the 17th anniversary of Hekigoto's death. In 1996, it was moved again to the present place under construction.
Though, at the beginning, he composed impressive and pictorial fixed form of haiku, he had a new tendency to put season theme and fixed form into the discard.
