Issoh-an

"Heilstones came down into even my iron bowl in my hands"

"I'm walking in the spring breeze with a bowl to beg for money in my hands"
"Muddy water becomes clear while flowing"
(Santoka)

Issoh-an is the hermitage where Haiku originator-Santohka Taneda lived after wondering over the countries.
This hermitage is located at the foot of Miyuki-temple Hill, that is about 500 meters away from the Johoku Campus of Ehime University.
A shed in the precinct of Miyuki-temple was converted into a hermitage. In 1939, at the age of 57, he lived in this hermitage, after the long religious tour in Shikoku, that was his last house in his life and named it "Issoh-an".
This hermitage was 20 minutes far from Dogo-spa that he loved to go, and he gave his all time to drinking and originating Haiku.
He ended his life at the October of next year, 1940, living to ten days longer than his own prediction.
Matsuyama City currently take care of Issoh-an, that is on view to the public twice a year, at spring and autumn.
Ryutai-ji temple, well known for Zen meditation, is located on the west side of Isso-an hermitage at 1-chome Miyuki-cho Matsuyama city.
In his Haiku poetry, "Sohmoku Toh - Grasses and Plants Tower",he said
"My hermitage crouches at the foot of Miyuki-temple Hill and be held in the Shrine and the Temple. In old age, people are used to get so tired of everything, that they are satisfied with simple of a grass for each person.
There is nothing for me but to carry out my silliness after all".
Late in his life, he originated many Haikus of his own expression-free rhythm, but almost of them were thrown out being unfinished manuscript.
We'd like to put up one of the Haiku that his teacher Seisensui Ogiwara seletected and made addition to "Sohmoku Toh".

"It's likely to be able to pass away,
In a calm frame of mind,
In the fresh green grasses"
