(Fusei Tomiyasu)
Fusei Tomiyasu (1885 - 1979) was born in Aich Prefecture as the fourth son to father "Saburo" and mother "Naka", in 1885. His real name was "Kenji". Naka's father had a Haiku pen name "Baigetsu", so his literary talent was descended from his mother.
In May of 1937(Showa 12), he retired as the vice minister of communications after 27 years' service with the Ministry of Communicaions. In Jul. of 1937(Showa 12), he visited Matsuyama for the first time and arrived at Niihama, he composed this Haiku as his first impression of Ehime.
This Haiku is the poem in praise of Shikoku admiring the brightness and magnanimous of the southern contry "Iyo". It is thought that the style of Fusei's "Kacho-Fuei" consisted in his view that the existence of pumpkin flower is great, as well as the highest mountain in Shikoku. The word of "The flower of pumpkin" is the season word of summer.
This monument was built by his pupil, "Getsuryu Nakanishi"(One-time chairman of Matsuyama Municipal Assemble) at the northwest of the JR Matsuyama Station Square, in Sept. of 1952(Showa 27), and unveiled on 12th, Oct. In 1980(Showa 55), it was tansferrred to the green belt at the southwest of the Station Square, for the undertaking to arrange the Station Square, and the unveiling ceremony was held in 21th Feb. of 1981(Showa 56) when it falls on the day before the 3rd anniversary of his death.
