The Bridge of "Deai"

"Sprightly young ayu fishes devided into two groups and went upstream" (Shiki)

This monument was built by Kahoku Mori and others(the member of Haiku gathering "Nansen-kai") to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Shiki's death. This monument is the first Shiki's monument in Ehime Prefecture. It's surprised that Shiki's monument was built first in 1933(showa 8) later than the monument of Meisetsu Naito (built in 1918), Seigetsu Murakami (built in 1922) and Kyoshi Takahama (built in 1928).
This Haiku appeared in the letter addressed to Hekigotou Kawahigashi in Matsuyama from Shiki in Tokyo(17th,June of 1892) as the part of March in the twelve months of the famous places and well-known products in Matsuyama, being expressed "flowed" in the last phrase. Since then, the last phrase was changed into "went upstream" in Shiki's Haiku Poetry "Kanzan Rakuboku".
Shiki, who had been to Tokyo to study, composed this Haiku longing for the scene of "The ferry of Deai", located the juncnion of Shigenobu-river and Ishite-river, and environs in early Spring.
The residence of Kurata Takechi whom Shiki in his boyhood called " a good friend" and was on friendly terms with, his friend four years older than Shiki, had been located in the Nagata Village (The present Masaki-cho, Iyo county) across the river. Shiki had been used to visit acrossing the river by ferry and go on an overnight stopping to Kurata's residence. At that time, there were no bridge.
