"The smell of ume blossoms is
Shiki and Saneyuki were so intimate
that they called each other "You and I""
(Mokuzen Sakai)
The bronze statue of Saneyuki Akiyama was built at Dogo Park before the war. This statue was rebuilt in the precinct of Ishite-ji Temple and then moved to this place( Baishin-ji Park) by the society of Ehime Kaiyu-kai, in 12th, May of 1936(Showa 38).
"You and I" was expressed "Omae to ashi" in Iyo accents with the friendship in this Haiku.
Saneyuki Akiyama was the staff officer under Heihachiro Tohgo, a commander-in -chief of Combined Fleet. He was said a great commander just as if he would gushed out the shrewed tactics. The excellent composition "It's fine Today, but the swell of waves is high" was composed by him.
"He was one year younger than his old playmete, Shiki. He studied in Matsuyama Junior Highschool and the preparatory school of the University together with Shiki, and lived together at the lodging in Sarugaku-cho, Kanda, Tokyo. Shiki gave him the review of "strong friend", reckoned among seven eccentric persons for the joke. After that, Saneyuki went on to the Naval Academy. Shiki composed Haiku
"When I see you off, something coming into my mind, I cryed in the mosquito net", when he saw Saneyuki off going abroad to America.
The personal appearances of Skiki, Saneyuki and Saneyuki's elder brother,Yoshifuru were portrayed clearly in the novel "Clouds on the top of the hill" by Ryotaro Shiba. The statue of Yoshifuru, Saneyuki's elder brother, lies on the top of the hill by the railroad line.
