The approach of Taisan-ji Temple
"Spring rain is falling
the poem of ancient time of dynasty
it is now old time"
(Toyojo Matsune)
Toyojo Matsune was born the second son to father "Gonroku", mother, "Toshiko",
at Tsukiji, Tokyo. His real name was "Toyojiro".
He graduated from the department of law of Kyoto Imperial University via
Matsuyama Junior High school, the first high school and Tokyo University, in
1905(Meiji 38).
In Matsuyama Junior High school, Nousei Abe (the later minister of Education, Science and Culture) was in one year lower grade and Soseki Natsume took his new post of English teacher in Toyojo's fifth year of the Junior High school. His connection to Soseki had started at the matter of this fact. While Toyojo was at the first High school, he took lesson in Haiku from Soseki in the fifth High school of Kumamoto. He also visited frequently Shiki-an Hermitage and gave his own pen name as "Toyojo" at first.
After Shiki's death, he had opened "the society of keeping the fixed form of Haiku" called "Haikai Sanshin" with Kyoshi and others, since May of 1906(Meiji 39).
After that time, Toyojo didn't satisfyed with the straight line of "sketch", and inclined to famous Haikai originator, "Basho" from Shiki. He started Haiku magazine "Shibugaki - a sour persimmon" at the age of 38, and parted from the group of "Hototogisu".
He was the well-mannered person who gave importance to the traditional dignity and loved "yugen" (profound and quiet elegance) and refined simplicity. And he had been unmarried and contented with honest poverty in his life.
This monument was built by the member of "Shibugaki-kai" in Matsuyama in 1950(Showa 25). It is the imposing Haiku monument of 3.5 meters height, that lies in the small higher thicket that is at the behind of the healing Buddha hall, on the opposite side, turned to the right of the approach of Taisan-ji Temple to the direction of the building to house Buddhist scriptures. This Haiku was carved on the stone found in the precinct at that time when the Haiku meeting of "Shibugaki" was held at the main hall of Taisan-ji Temple.
This Haiku imply that "intoning the poem of "Ise-story" or "kokin-shu", in the spring rain being hazying, I feel as if my body and soul have stayed in the ancient time ;the world of dynasty".
This monument lies by the Kyohshi Murakami's Haiku Monument "I give my prayers to the person who give way to me on pilgrim road in autumn".
