Chokenji Temple

"I step out toward the bulk of clouds
raising its head"
(Santoka)

"I took a step forward
into the this alley where
dandelions are in full bloom"
(Ichijun)

These haiku monuments were built facing each other in the precincts of Chokenji Temple.
Ichijun's real name is Hajime Takahashi, and he has been a teacher at Matsuyama Commercial College (The present Matsuyama University).
On October of 1939, he looked after the wandering Haiku originator,Santoka Taneda who had come to Matsuyama in persuit of the place to die.
These two Haiku monuments of Santoka who loved wandering and drinking "sake",and Ichijun who watched Santoka's last moments, are facing each other just as if it has revived their mental interchange of that time.
Storage to say, both of them died at the age of fifty-nine.
