Joshinji Temple



"Colors of birds with beautiful feathers
full to the brim over
a lump of scarlet maple leaves"

Birds with beautiful feathers, birds of passage in autumn, is the season word of autumn. This Haiku was originated on the pretext of a bird of passage with beautiful feathers.
In 1840 (Tenpou 11), Seiryo Kuroda, originated this Haiku, was born in Kamiya-cho, getting in the street corner of "Fuda" in the Castle Town to the west.
Seiryo's grandfather, Hakunen Kuroda was the pupil of Chodo Kurita, the Haiku originator in Matsuyama. Hakunen's adopted son was Boutou Kuroda, and his son was Seiryo Kuroda. Seiryo's adopted son was Seikou Kuroda. Their family was the distinguished family in Haiku over four generations. Seiryo established "Suiheki-sha" Haiku Association, with Tansei Utsunomiya, and took an active part in the world of Haiku in local, as the leading figure. His activities were handed over by the new trends of Shiki and others.
Joshinji Temple of Tendai Sect, where this monument was built, by Sadayuki Matsudaira, the first leader of the domain of Matsuyama, to supress the demon's gate lying to the northeast of the Temple, imitating the Touei-zan Temple. There is the Sadayuki's mausoleum in the precincts.
Kohaku Fujino(He was a cousin of Shik)'s grave standed in Joshin-ji Temple.
In a hill at the back of Joshinji Temple, trees grow thick, and cherry trees, pine trees and maple trees in the precincts are beautiful all the year round.
The uphill road of "The pass of Seto-Kaze"(the road for taking a walk) starts at the east-facing slope of Joshinji Temple in the Iwai Valley.
