Katsuyama-cho in Matsuyama
" I viewed three hornable Haikai-originators
of Basho's family style in the inn
where ume blossoms are open"
(Issa Kobayashi)
- Visitting the residence of Uobumi to have look at
the three pairs of hanging scrols of Sodho, Basho and Kikaku. -:
Notes: "Basho's family style" is the style of Haikai
(the ancient name of Haiku) that gave weight to "sabi"
(antique look), "karumi"(sence of slight), "yuugen"
(profoud and quiet elegance) and "kanjaku"(elegant simplicity)
and was created by Basho in the era of Anei or Tenmei.
Issa Kobayashi (33 years old at that time) came to Matsuyama, and visited Uobumi Kudara (51 years old at that time), the extraordinary merchant in Matsuyama, after he had viewed the cherry blossom of Izayoi at Yamagoe in Matsuyama.
Issa composed this Haiku to be deeply touched by viewing the three pair of hanging scrolls (it"s called "kakemono"), "Three honorable Haikai originators' legends on the picture" of Sodoh, Basho and Kikaku.
The characters on this monument is the enlargement of his own handwriting (being put on the record of his travel on Kansei 7).
This haiku monument was built on 17th May, of 1970 (Showa 45) by Mataichi
Okuda of Mikawaya.
