"I'm standing under the biridge
of shindate and taking a view of
beautiful moon of Today"
(Shiki)

Shiki composed this Haiku in autumn of 1895 (Meiji 28).
"moon of Today" was just the harvest moon that was a bright moon on third (Thirsday) ,October of this year.
The biridge of Shindate was built as the first bridge over the Ishite River, and called "Eikyu Bridge" or "Hourai Bridge" at first. This place was called "Shindate-guchi" and regarded as important spot, because many accommodations and the public barrier station were sited. Shindate Bridge was built of wood and had high girders and a slight arch.
A bright moon rising from the eastern edge of mountain would come into view beautifully to Shiki's eyes, under the bridge of the lower reache of Ishite River.
This is the last time when Shiki viewed a bright moon in his home town, Matsuyama.
The characters on this Haiku monument were copied from the Haiku poetry "Kanzan Rakuboku".
This monument was built on April of 1966 (Showa 41).
