   "A Happy New Year's Day
We have a family of Emperor and
Mt. Fuji in this country" (Meisetsu)
This monument, widely known as Haiku at the begining of the New Year, was built to celebrate Meisetsu Naito's 70th birthday in 1918(Taisho 7). It was built 15 years sooner than the first construction of Shiki's Haiku monument, which was built in 1933(Showa 8).
Katsuta shukei(the then Finance Minister), who was a boarding student of Tokiwa-kai Dormitory supervised by Meisetsu, proposed to build this monument.
Meisetsu retured home accompanied his wife to present at the unveiling ceremony taken place splendidly on 27th Oct.. This homecoming after 17years absence was to be the last coming in his life.
