Senshuji Temple

Notes Oubaku Sect: One of the great three Zen Sect. Ingen from Min of China built "O ubaku-zan, Manpukuji Temple" in Uji, Kyoto and propagated this religious sect.

This Haiku is put on the Haiku poetry "Sansaku-shu" prefacing as "It doesn't began to rain though sky is mainly cloudy, in the afternoon of 21st Sept. of 1895 (Meiji 28).
This Haiku was originated by Shiki when he made a walk to the foot of Mt. Miyukiji with three of Aisho, Rokudho (Kyokudo) and Baioku, the menders of "Shofu-kai".
Senshuji Temple at the foot of Mt. Miyukiji is the Zen Temple of Oubaku Sect. The famous roadside cedar trees not retains little of the oldtimes.
The priest who drew the Southern school of Chinese painting is the 18th chief priest of this Zen Temple , "Shudho" who died in 1884 (Meiji 17) at the age of 64. He died consequently about 10 years ago since when Shiki took a walk in 1895 (Meiji 28).
Shudoh was good at painting in the Nanga style and he drew jointly with Kanzan Ohara ,Shiki's grandfather-in-law, and Goyu Takechi whom Shiki looked up as a teacher of calligraphy. Therefore Shiki would feel much more longing for the priest of Shudho.
The characters on this monument are the enlargement of his own hand writing in Haiku poetry "Kanzan rakuboku". This monument was built by the members of "Matsuyama Shiki association" in spring of 1970 (Showa 45).
