The remains of tea shop in Higashino

"This place is my country home
So don't hew down this pine trees
Don't cut down this bamboo's"

(Kyoshi)

Kyoshi Takahama returned to Matsuyama between 23rd and 13th Sept. of 1951 (Showa 26), to attend the 50th anniversary of the death of Shiki. This Haiku was prefaced with "passing Higashino on Sept. 21st".
This district was managed by Kyoshi's grandfather, Masaaki Ikeuchi, in the old feudal domain age (in the Tokugawa period). "Mousou" bamboo in this district was called "Kounan" bamboo that was brought over Satsuma (the present Kagoshima prefecture) from China.
It had been said this bamboo's were specially handed over to the 17th generation of Sadataka by his relation, Shimazu in 1763 (Genmon 1).
This Haiku implies "Don't cut down bamboo's that the leader of the feudal domain planted by himself". "cut down bamboo" is the season word of autumn.
The characters on this monument, that was built on May of 1958 (Showa 33), are Kyoshi's own handwriting.
We can also see the Haiku monument,on that Haiku originated by Shiki when he returned Matsuyama in 1895 (Meiji 28) was carved, inner part of this garden.
