Issa Kobayashi(1763-1827)

"Lying down at the curb
of a open-air hot spring that have
a buttefly come to stay"

In 1996, just 200 years have passed since Issa Kobayashi came over to Matsuyama. Issa's visit to Matsuyama was counted two times of Kansei 7 (1795) and the following year, Kansei 8(1796).
Chodo Kurita, well-known as Haiku poet, lived in Matsuyama when he visited.
Issa found a kindred sprit in Chodo and originated a numerous of Haiku. In 1796, his second visit to Matsuyama, he syayed at Chodo's residence(Nijou-an) for half a year. It has been the best conceibable that a acquitance of both of them was out of the ordinary.
Refering to his travel diary "Kansei 7 kikou-a record of his travel", this Haiku appeared in the description of Feb.1, following on the foreword "At around the Dogo Spa". Because Feb.1 in the lunar calendar falls on Mar.21 in the solar calendar, it may be imaginable that it has been a bright and clean day.
It seems that there was a open-air hot spring founded by main hot water flowed out, on the west of the Mainbuilding of Dogo Spa.
In a life of 65 years, Issa originated about 20 thousands of Haiku. The Haiku such as "Don't swat a fly, because he rubs his hands and legs together" never have been originated without his sharp observant eye. His Haiku fashion is amiable and lovely. But late in his life, his haiku never led a happy life.
