Yuyama (The church of Tenri Sect in Mizobe-cho)
"Charcoal dealer sell and return
To the mountains around the hot springs
on a moonlight evening now "
(Shiki)
In 1892 (Meiji 25), this Haiku was composed by Shiki. Yuyama in this Haiku used to be called Yu-no-yama (the mountain of hot-spa) and located at the upper reaches of Ishite River, along that the seven hot springs gushed out.
The name of Yu-no-yama was derived from this fact.
The characters on this Haiku monument, that was built on Sept. 8th of 1956 (Showa 31), was Kyokudo Yanagihara's handwriting.
At that time when shiki was young, many people engaged in forestry and burned the abundant woods to charcoals to go sell them to the Castle Town.
