This Haiku was composed by Soseki in Dec. 14th of 1895 (Meiji 28), when he took a stroll and visited Enpukuji Temple.
Enpukuji Temple is the old Buddhist temple of Tendai sect.
It had been said that in the period of Kenmu-no-chukho (The restoration of Kenmu), Yoshimune, the son of Yoshisada Nitta on the side of Southern Imperial court (Nancho), came to Iyo (Matsuyama) to hide himself in the depth of Yuyama, and left this world in 1403 (Ouei 10), at the age of 75.
In Enpukuji Temple. his memorial tablet was set up, and his suit of armor and sword were put in.
This Haiku monument was built in 1969 (Showa 44).

Kenmu-no-chuko (The restoration of kenmu)
Emperor Godaigo overthrew Kamakura shogunate and restored Emperor
government in 1334. But, Takauji Ashikaga rose the standard of revolt
against the Emperor and rushed into the Nanboku era (1336 - 1392) only two
and a half years ago.
The Southern Imperial court (Nancho)

in the period of Nanbokucho era. Alias Yoshino-cho.
