Ide Shrine
"A very balmy wind now
Spurt out the writing written large characters
from the grove of God"
(Shiki)
This Haiku appeared in the section of astronomy in Shiki's Haiku draft in the summer of 1897 (Meiji 30), prefacing " at the festival of Tachibana Tenjin Shrine".
In the precincts of Ide Shrine, that this Haiku monument was built in, "The shrine of Tenman " was enshrined and the festival of "Tenjin" was held on a grand scale, on June 25th of the lunar calendar (July 24th and 25th of the present day) in the era of Meiji.
People used to struggled to dedicate the large writings in Indian ink, that was called " large characters", to "Tenman Shrine"on the day of the festival to take after their good luck connected to "Tenjin".
Shiki had a reputation for writing and so he made a large collection of impromptu writing in his boyhood and took pleasure in hanging it to the branch of pine trees and so on in the shrine. it will be able to suppose Shiki would compose this Haiku remembering that time.
