It is said that this Haiku is Oukyo Okudaira's farewell Haiku composed on the eve of his death. This monument was carved on the back of the grave of old Baite ki (his pen name).
Oukyo was the chief retainer of Matsuyama feudal domain, and studied Haikai (t he old type of Haiku) under Mokuou Shiomi in Matsuyama.
In 1881 (Meiji 14), Fueisha in Minato-cho, Matsuyama started the 7-th Haiku Ma gazine in the whole country. At that time, Oukyo Okudaira and Kijyu Ohara were said two greatest authorities in the world of Haikai.
He died in 1990 (Meiji 23) at the age of 82.
