" Desolate wintry scene is coming in sight, a lump of clouds casts it's shadow on the mirror " (Shiki) " I have the view of a clump of winter trees that is as high as the fire-bell" (Soseki)

The first Haiku was originated in winter of 1895(Meiji 28), and appeared in Shiki's Haiku Poetry, "Kanzan Rakuboku" and "Byoyo Mangin". This Haiku is the one of Shiki's "One hundred Haiku connected cloud", which Shiki wrote for the Haiku originator, Engetsu Mori (1870-1955) from Yodo, at Gudabutsu-an Hermitage.This characters were the enlarged scale of Shiki's own writing.
The second Haiku was originated by Soseki at the first Haiku meeting at Shiki-an Hermitage in Tokyo that the eight men of Meisetsu, Ougai(Mori), Hyotei, Soseki, Kyoshi, Kazen, Hekigodoh, and Shiki(the promoter) meeted earch other and shared table, in the afternoon of 3th Jan. of 1896(Meiji 29).
After that, Soseki wrote this Haiku adding to Shiki's writing at Engetsu's residence in Yodo. This Haiku scored 4 points(The highest point in that meeting). This characters were the enlarged scale of Soseki's own writing.
This day, Ougai Mori took part in the meeting being late, and originated only one Haiku

"I took the plunge and go out and stand at the gate in the pouring heil" (Ougai)

, on the subject of "heil", that scored 2 points. This monument was built in 2th Nov. of 1986(Showa 61), celebrating the 267th annual district meeting of International Rotary Club.
