The approach of Ishiteji Temple

"The ringing sounds of bell
Call Kamakura Era to mind as if
Gone far back in time"
(Goken) Maeda

The originator of Senryu, Goken Maeda composed this Haiku when he visited Ishiteji Temple. The large number of buildings of Deva gate, Bell tower and so on were built in Kamakura Era (1192 - 1333). The ringing sounds of the Bell remind people of that time even now.
Goken Maeda was born in Sakaide city in 1889 (Meiji 22) and entered the Iyo Railway Company. He loved Matsuyama and settled down there until the end of his life. He had been well known as the founder of the game of "paper, stone and scissors" designed by base ball style.
In 1924 (Taisho 13), the base ball team of Iyo Railway Company (in Matsuyama city) was beaten by the team of Kosho club (in Takamastu city) by a score of zero. It was the first time of this game when members of Iyo Railway Company danced in the social gathering held in that evening to take revenge for the lost game by way of entertainment. This game came into vogue all over the country since that time.
This Haiku monument was built by the society of preservation for Ishiteji Temple in 1958 (Showa 33), There is Shiki's monument of Haiku in the Haiku poetry "Sansaku-shu" next to this monument.

Notes: "Senryu" The short poem of seventeen syllables. It has the same style of Haiku and makes a shrewd expression of funny feelings, public manners and customs, the weak points of human life, social conditions and so forth. The most distinctive feature of Senryu are brief, wit, humor and satire.
