Housho-en(Station of Dogo-spa)

This Haiku was originated as Haiku built in the scenic spots and places of historical interest at the regular meeting of "Shofu-kai" in 3rd, April of 1897(Meiji 30).
This is the most important Haiku of Kyokudoh, paraised by Shiki. Now, whenever opportunity offers, this Haiku used to be referred for the publicity of the tourist resort, Iyo - Matsuyama. The tone of seven syllables with extra in middle phrase in Japanese "Fune Iyoni Yorite" give the taste of comfortable natural feature suitable for Matsuyama.
At first, this Haiku Monument was built by the Pond of Hosho in Feb. of 1940, and after that,it was transferred to the southern side of the main building of Dogo Spa, the western foot of the Mt. Kanmuri. It was transferred again to Hosho-en that had been reclaimed land of Hosho Pond. The characters on this monument were written by Kyokudoh's own writing.
In 1897(Meiji 30), when this Haiku was originated, it was very eventful for Kyokudoh; He published "Hototogisu" in Matsuyama, on 15th, Jan.,and married with "Tora", the sister of Ikkoh Iwasaki. He had got a good review that he was skillful and delicate from shiki, the year before, and he was praised by Shiki as the prominent person, this year. Kyokudho who had been living long until the age of ninety, originated this Haiku at the age of just thirty.
