This Haiku monument was built in the playground of the former Matsuyama High School, on May 3rd of 1938 (Showa 13).
Gafu was born in Okayama Prefecture in 1899 (Meiji 32). His real name is "Masayoshi". He had no sooner graduated from the department of arts, a course of Germany language and literature of Kyoto University than left for his new post in Matsuyama High School.
He originated "The Haiku association of Matsuyama High School" with Shusen Hayashibara and others as soon as he arrived at his post in Matsuyama High School.
In 1954 (Showa 25), he changed the name of the Haiku association to "The Haiku association of Ehime University" and issued the first number of Haiku magazine "Itadori" and merged "the Haiku association of Ehime University".
In 1966 (Showa 41), "The Haiku association of Ehime University", that had stopped to play active parts at one time, was revived in Ehime University and the Haiku magazine, "Haiku of Ehime University" was first published by Nobuyuki Takahashi.
