Shoujuji Temple
"Getting cold in the morning
My voice of "Hello!" sounded right through
The hall of inner entrance"
(Shiki)
Referring to Haiku poetry "Sansaku-shu" of Oct. 7th of 1895 (Meiji 28), Shiki composed this Haiku when he visited Shoujuji Temple to ask the chief priest of the Buddhist temple, "Fukkai", to accompany him on the way to Seigetsu Murakami's residence in Imade-cho.
"cold in the morning" is the season word of autumn because of feeling the morning chill in autumn. Shiki visited Shoujuji Temple and said "Hello! May come in?" at the inner entrance hall of the annex of the temple. This Haiku implies that his voice rung ding-dong. (referred to Kyoshi's "The interpretation of Shiki' s Haiku")
Fukkai was Shiki's friend of Haiku and named "Isshuku" as an another pen name.
The Haiku gathering of "Shofu-kai" was often held in the room on the
second floor of the annex of this temple. Shiki composed Haiku ;
"A bright moon threw light over
The tiled roof on the second floor
of this annex of temple"
(Shiki)
In the spring of 1895 (Meiji 28), Shiki came home to visit his family's grave, on the way of going China as a correspondent in the Shino-Japanese War. A member of Shofu-kai, Nanchiku Shiraishi, asked Shiki in the farewell party for Shiki by the members, " What's Haiku of new school like?".
Shiki looked around the room and then composed Haiku;
"The member of fifteen men
A priest and laymen are composing Haiku
The ume blossoms are arranged"
(Shiki)
And Shiki gave him a reply that it shows a feeling of this Haiku is real. "Fukkai" was the right priest in this Haiku and fifteen members including Shiki were present in this farewell party.
Isshuku" alias "Fukkai" was born on Dec. 25th of 1863 (Meiji 1), and one year younger than Shiki.
He died on Nov. 24th of 1945 (Showa 20), as a chief priest of Myoushinji Temple in Kyoto, aged 76.
He sent a post card of sympathy with Haiku ;
"A storm just come on
A scarecrow swayed as if it would
Be about to fall down"
(Isshuku)
on Sept. 18th of 1902 (Meiji 35), the day before Shiki's death, just as if he would have a premonition of Shiki's death. This letter had been the last letter addressed to Shiki while he was alive.
