Shiki-an Hermitage
Shiki's sickroom was 6-tatami- mat-room faced to the garden. There was a closet
on the east side of the room and a straw rain-cape and a sedge hat had been hun
g on a middle pillar of it. They were the memory of when he had been healthy.
Four piece of glass-fitted shoji(a sliding door) were fitted on the south side
of the room, he could have a better view of the garden. Kyoshi Takahama had jo
iner fitted up them that were the best present for the bedridden sick person bec
ause it was very warm for him in winter. At that time, a glass-fitted door was rare
are and very expensive.
He originated a great number of Haiku from this sickroom. We'd like to show th
e one of these Haiku.
" I can see the cockscombs
coming out in the garden I'm sure
The number of them is fourteen or fifteen"
