The gate of Senshuji Temple



"Sokuhi's framed calligraphy is hanging
On the temple gate against the mountain
That seems like sleeping calmly"

This Haiku was composed in 1904 (Meiji 37) and its theme is Sokuhi's calligraphy, "Kainan Soukutsu" that was put up on the main gate of Senshuji temple.
Sokuhi was a Buddhist priest came from China and opened Senshuji Temple belonged to the religious Sect of "Oubaku" in 1687 (Teiryo 4).
People in other feudal domain envied the cathedral of temple and said ; "There are two things in Matsuyama, "Kawara Kojiki (Poito) ; a beggar on the dry riverbed (kabuki actors were called thus, because they used to play on the dry riverbed of Shijou in Kyoto), and Senshuji Temple, that are not suitable for Matsuyama."
Senshuji Temple was burnt down by the great air raid on Matsuyama made on July 26, 1945 (Showa 20), but this temple gate escaped fire.
Sokuhi's framed calligraphy was as large as a tatami mat.
On Sept.21, 1895 (Meiji 28), Shiki took a stroll here and composed the following Haiku ;

" At the foot of Mt.Miyukiji
               Temple belong to the denomination of Oubaku
                         Japan cedar is in autumn"
