The pass of Seto-Kaze

"I am feeling lonly
seeing a blade of withered miscanthus
in the Sagi Valley"
(Shiki)

How beautiful and well sounded name of "The pass of Seto-Kaze" is!
The uphill road(the road for taking a walk) starts at the east-facing slope of Joshinji Temple in the Iwai Valley. The mandarin orange grove covered the slope of the mountain road as far as the eye can reach. This place is known for its most beautiful scenery in Matsuyama City, and we can look out over the whole twon centered by Matsuyama Castle.
In 1892(Meiji 25), Shiki originated this Haiku in spiteof himself, overlooking the scenery of Sagi Valley and being impressed with its silence and lonliness.
